How Much Time Americans Spend in Reading Books

  • March 14, 2023

The amount of time that Americans spend reading books can vary widely depending on factors such as age, education, income, and personal preferences. However, studies have shown that, on average, Americans spend relatively little time reading books.

According to the Pew Research Center, the average American adult spends just over 6 hours per week reading, which is less than one hour per day. This figure includes reading for both personal and work-related reasons, so the amount of time spent reading books specifically may be lower.

It’s also important to note that the amount of time spent reading has declined in recent years, as Americans increasingly turn to other forms of media, such as social media, video games, and streaming video.

Despite this trend, however, there are still many Americans who place a high value on reading and who spend significant amounts of time reading books. These individuals are more likely to be well-educated, higher income, and older, and they tend to read more books and spend more time reading than the average American.
